Gentleness Part 1/7

Devo written by Awaken Team Member, Char Miles
Galatians 5:22-23

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.

As I write this devotional which is supposed to be about gentleness, I began to reflect on the pain and suffering that our Lord Jesus Christ had to endure for us. I remembered what Isaiah had prophesied and it brings me to tears.  Isaiah 52:14:  As many were astonished at you- his appearance was so marred, beyond human semblance, and his form beyond that of the children of mankind.

As I was contemplating this verse and picturing this in my mind, I felt a very strong conviction that He exhibited every fruit of the spirit while being tortured to death.  I thought how can anyone go through what He went through and still portray love, joy, peace, forbearance (patience), kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.

I didn’t even know if this was feasible, but after researching, and thinking about each fruit of the spirit, I feel Jesus did exhibit these traits.

Love – He let himself be crucified for all of us.

Joy – I believe he knew how many of us would come to Him and be saved.

Peace – Maintained calmness or peace when enduring extreme torture.

Patience – He did not turn in anger to the ones who were mocking, beating and killing Him.

Kindness – He asked the Father to forgive them for they do not know what they are doing.

Faithfulness – He stayed obedient to His Fathers will, even while being persecuted and killed.

Gentleness – He did not lash out or rage against his tormentors, he humbled himself with submission

Self-Control – He did have the power to save himself, but he exhibited self-control to complete Gods will.

In conclusion let us always try to exhibit the fruits of the spirit. Let us remember the words Jesus spoke in Matthew 11:29-30 – Take My yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for you souls.  For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.

Remember a gentle word, a gentle touch a gentle smile, could bring someone joy, peace, or love they have been missing and this could change their day or maybe change their life.  Jesus loves us, portray this love to all you come in contact with.

I thank you Jesus, I love you, I honor you and I give all the glory to you
